This course examines the developmental trajectory of major achievements
in language (vocabulary, phonology, grammar) and literacy (print awareness,
writing, phonological awareness) across early and middle childhood.
Factors that place children at risk for developmental differences are
explored, including developmental disability and poverty. Likewise,
factors that promote children’s resilience in language and literacy
development even within adverse conditions, including features of homes
and classrooms, are also considered. Ecological theory is used to understand
the multidimensional nature of risk and resilience in young children
as they develop language and literacy skills.
